What I love most about being both a physician and an executive is the unique opportunity to impact people’s lives on a larger scale. Improving the lives of older adults living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease - through people, novel technologies and high quality resources - is what my work with Lizzy Care and the Dementia Spring Foundation is all about. The lived experience of dementia today is nothing like what it was decades ago, with new therapeutics that offer a glimmer of hope for a real cure, novel ways to reduce isolation and boredom, and proven techniques for reducing harm and unnecessary suffering along the way.

The central focus of my professional career has always been older adults: listening for their needs and fears, designing programs and products that deliver care more effectively and safely, and striving for better outcomes and experiences. The main challenge for healthcare today is to reorganize care — and ourselves — around what works, meet our patients where they are with humility and professionalism, and use data, analytics and technology to make providing care easier, not harder.

I learned early on that interdisciplinary teams make the magic happen, that it takes more than just doctors and nurses to properly close gaps in care. And that being truly present, earning trust, these are a critical part of high quality healthcare, for all those who look to us for compassion and results.
