We're building towards a future where it's commonplace to know the price of healthcare in advance. To me, it's mainly about dignity for patients. It's already scary enough to navigate the healthcare system while sick or injured - there's no need to make it scarier with the threat of debt, surprise bills or bankruptcy.

The challenge itself is fascinating: The economics of healthcare are controlled by contract agreements that live on scanned PDFs and scattered fee schedules. Many of them haven't changed since the 90s, and they've never seen the light of day or faced the scrutiny of basic economics. What happens now that (as of 1/1/21) federal law requires these rates to be shared in public, in a menu-like fashion, for patients and third parties to digest?

At Turquoise, we're betting on: 1) Public disclosure puts pressure for simplicity and openness on the system as a whole (clearer pricing methods, openly shared online), and 2) economic pressure drives better value proposition for patients (quality, accessibility, and convenience tied to price).

What software do we build to bridge the old to the new? How do we get providers and payers to buy in (and see the value of empowering patients to be rational consumers of healthcare?) How do we empower patients to be savvy shoppers as they are in other industries?
