I work at the intersection of AI research, governance, and organizational design.
Since 2016, I’ve focused on how AI systems can be developed and used in ways that safely enable scientific advances and improve collective decision-making. At DeepMind, I worked as a research and strategy aide to CEO Demis Hassabis and later led a team (Meta-Research) that built AI tools to improve internal scientific, organizational, and strategic decisions.
From 2021–2025 I served in the U.S. government, working on AI policy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Security Council. I focused on ensuring that powerful AI systems can be developed safely, advance societal wellbeing, and reinforce democratic values. This work included helping to establish the AI Safety Institute (now the Center for AI Standards and Innovation) and co-authoring the United States’ first national security memorandum on AI (NSM-25). Previously, I wrote a New York Times bestselling book with Gen. (Ret.) Stanley McChrystal about how technological change necessitates new organizational structures.
Across roles, I’ve been especially interested in how AI can improve institutional efficacy, strengthen democratic processes, help groups reason more effectively, and deepen cooperation and trust.
