Planning and analysis are as essential in business as it is in life. However, going into every situation with an ROI in mind that drives your every decision kills the spirit of the interaction and turns us into a soulless robot.

This may sound funny coming from someone who has lived and breathed risk management and due diligence for over three decades. In my prior roles, I had to live by measurements, loss tolerances, and risk calculations in order to ensure the security of the organizations for which I worked. That said, some of the best decisions I have ever made went against the grain.

-Listening to and learning the story behind merchants on MATCH, and giving them a second chance
-Seeing past unsupportive financials and spending time to understand the business dynamics and determining the true “probability of failure”
-And generally giving merchants a chance to remedy mistakes and work themselves out of hot water

In many cases, the resulting relationships were much stronger making for more long-term and profitable accounts.

This highlights one of the biggest challenges for payments companies; how to leverage technology, scorecards, models, and AI/ML and not lose your soul.

Finding the right balance is key, and at Payzli, we enjoy the many benefits that come with leveraging technology but are also very willing and able to make exceptions where it makes sense. We burn more calories… but we believe you’re worth it.

Over the past three decades, I have been responsible for the Risk and Underwriting functions of multiple top-5 global processors and several super-ISOs. My approach has always been to find a way to say “yes” as opposed to the much easier path of saying “no”.

This has allowed me to build many amazing relationships with sales professionals at all levels.

This approach has served us well with both partners and merchants and we will continue to use our platform to empower our customers through brilliant fintech solutions (with lots of humanity sprinkled in).
