Payment gateways have immense friction for international transactions:

a) International customers do not have access to local payment methods; face significant failure rate with cards and Visa/Mastercard charge significant surcharge on both customer and merchant.
b) To offer local payments, merchants need entities in multiple geographies and integrate multiple payment gateways. This takes time, money, effort and significant tech effort (upfront & ongoing).
c) In fact, merchants with international customers need to manage indirect tax and compliance across jurisdictions. This requires merchants to hire expensive firms with deep global tax & legal expertise

Moreover, Payment Gateways do not take care of tax, compliance nor do they have the tech stack to simplify payments.
