PlanetWatch, a French environmental monitoring startup based in Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Ain, has raised $3.2 million in seed funding from investors including Borderless Capital, Algorand Foundation, and Algorand.
The company aims to decentralize and incentivize environmental monitoring by partnering with blockchain technology and one of the leading research centers in the world. They plan to build the world's first immutable air quality ledger and reward any contribution to their ecosystem.
Air pollution is a significant global challenge, with it being the fourth largest health risk in the world, causing one in ten deaths in 2013, according to the World Bank. Current air quality monitoring is usually not available in real-time, with data only being provided from large, expensive scientific instruments installed at a small number of locations.
PlanetWatch's innovative approach leverages a new generation of fixed and mobile sensors and the direct participation of the population to rapidly deploy, on-demand and at low cost, a dense surveillance network whose data can be released in real-time.
Their aim is to provide early indications of pollution peaks and to issue timely warnings to the population.
